Is your computer getting slower?

All too often I see people buying new computers despite the fact that their old computer has more than enough power to accomplish all of the things that they need to do. When I ask them about this their excuse is often that their computer is "slowing down". Their computer very probably is getting slower, but the fix is not necessarily to buy a new computer!

I can understand why many think that their computer just slows down after awhile. After a year or two of use, it takes much longer to boot up, open applications and even do simple things like word processing. However, this is not caused by the computer hardware slowing down, it is still just as fast as the day it was bought! Instead, more and more software has been installed that are all competing for the same computer resources. It is also very possible that the machine is infested with spyware and viruses.

To use a car analogy, imagine you buy a new car that can go 100 MPH. Great, it is nice and fast! But before you know it, people are asking you if they can hook their luggage on top of your car (don't ask me why, it's an analogy!). People keep doing this for a couple of years. After 3 years of owning the car it now looks like a mobile airport luggage carousel! Due to all the added weight and awful aerodynamics your car can now only go 50 MPH. Did your car get less powerful? Of course not, it still has the same engine, it is just that now that engine needs to carry much more than it was designed to! So, you being the smart person you are, figure that to get your car back to normal you should just take all the luggage off. Genius!
