Bud Boy Tech - My New Blog

I've decided to start up a new blog, and I've called it Bud Boy Tech. I decided to start this blog up because I like to comment on all things technology/geeky. With this blog I'm a little more limited, as I am trying to get an audience of new or inexperienced computer users who are just figuring things out. On Bud Boy Tech I will be covering things that are more technical, or perhaps of interest only to geeks.

I called it Bud Boy Tech because my Dad used to call me bud boy when I was a kid. I was originally going to call it RobsTech, but that was taken, I think Bud Boy Tech works equally as well so no harm no foul : ).

How to add RAM to your computer

3 reasons to stop using Internet Explorer today

Internet Explorer is not secure

Sad to say, but IE is just not secure. Take a look at this article to see just how bad. Unfortunately Microsoft has just not done a good job at making IE secure. With older versions IE allows any code to be executed on your machine, which means that viruses and spyware can be installed on your machine without you even downloading it! The most recent version of Internet Explorer, 7, makes a lot of improvements in this area. However, I just can't get over Microsoft's bad track record on security, you deserve better than that! Plus, read on for more reasons to switch...

5 ways to get your computer secure and keep it that way

Updated on Wednesday, September 3, 2008 at 11:37PM by Registered CommenterRobert Steenwyk

I'll be honest, 80% of my business comes from people with some sort of virus or spyware and them wanting it removed. What I'm about to tell you could actually hurt my business, at least if you follow the directions. More than likely you are using either Windows XP or Vista, so I will be focusing on how to secure those systems. This post is going to be fairly brief, I won't be going into the nitty gritty details on how to perform each step. However, I will be following this post up with detailed instructions on how to complete each step as I get the time.

Why you shouldn't use your ISP's email service

Many home computer users use their internet service provider's email service. This is a bad idea. This is a bad idea because if you move or decide to switch ISP's, you will lose access to that account and you will have to let all of your contacts know that you are switching email providers. Very few ISP's provide the option to pay for their email service unbundled from their broadband or dialup internet access plans, so if you absolutely have to keep your @SBCGlobal.net email for example you have to at least pay for a dial up plan, even if you will never use it!

Updated on Thursday, August 7, 2008 at 08:39PM by Registered CommenterRobert Steenwyk

If you are reading this, you have access to a computer that has an internet connection. These are the only tools you need to get access to more information than you or I can possibly fathom.

The web is a BIG place, but you probably already knew that. In fact, there are over 11.5 billion web pages!

A Little Known Way to Move Off-Screen Applications in XP

Have you ever had a application that was stuck "outside" of your screen? If you have ever hooked a laptop up to a second monitor, and later unplugged the monitor while still having applications on that monitor you have probably run into this. If you unplug that monitor while applications are still on that monitor, XP doesn't know what to do! The application is still up and running, it is just that you can't use it because you can't see it.
